Her inspirational romance Image in the Looking Glass, has been selected for reprinting by Guideposts Book Division. The book, set in Andersonville during the Civil War period, and originally published by Zondervan Publishing House, had sold out in the trade paper edition as well as the smaller book club edition when second rights to the novel were chosen for a third printing. "Every writer has a fantasy that they’ll hear from a publisher saying their book has been accepted for publication," says Mrs. Cook, But when the book has sold out of two earlier editions and picked up by another publishing house for a third printing is good news indeed. |

After Mrs. Cook heard from the editors of Guidepost that they wanted to buy the subsidiary rights for printing an entirely new edition of Image in the Looking Glass she couldn't believe what she was reading. In fact, so surprised by the request she asked her husband, Sumter County businessman J. N. Cook, to re-read the publisher's letter to her. "It was totally unexpected, something out of the blue," says Mrs. Cook, "I am particularly pleased because the sale was unsolicited and I don't know how they (Guidepost) knew about the book. I am also pleased the book is being printed again because Sumter County will receive additional recognition since the book is set near Andersonville." The book is among those listed in Guideposts Book Division’s catalog, released week and available through mail order. Mrs. Cook has received national recognition for Image in the Looking Glass, one of three inspirational novels she has written. In 1986, she received a national writing award for the book from The National League of American Pen Women, taking second place in the author’s competition for adult books. The book competed with 66 other books in the adult category that year. The novel takes place on the fictitious Looking Glass Plantation near Andersonville during the Civil War. In writing the book, Mrs. Cook says she wanted to preserve details of life on a plantation through a dramatic event and the book is unique in that she interviewed people whose parents actually experienced the events. Image In the Looking Glass is the story of a young woman who comes to Sumter County seeking safety from Sherman’s advancing army. Instead, she finds mystery through the suspense of living out the daily events on a plantation near Andersonville prison, murder and eventually romance. Mrs. Cook wove historical details revolving around Captain Henry Wirz, the commandant of Andersonville Prison, and Dr. Head into the fictional account. The author of six published books she is currently working on a seventh, Mount Up With Wings, which is set In Madison, Georgia. The story is how the town was saved from Sherman’s torch as the army marched toward Savannah. The story revolves around the fictional character, Jenny Mobley, her life and family saga and is woven in with actual historical figures from that period of time - Joshua Hill, Alexander Stevens, vice president of the Confederacy, and Rebecca Felton, the first woman United States senator. Mrs. Cook’s other published books include From Violence to Love: The History of DeSoto, Georgia; Tabernacle of Living Water: The History of Dooley Campground; The First Hundred Years: The History of DeSoto Baptist Church. The two historical romances she has written and that have met with good success are The River Between and Wind Along the River. |
