DESOTO - Local author Jacquelyn Cook won the Best in State book award for 1995 given by the Georgia division of the National League of American Pen Women at the state convention held recently in Roswell. The honor was for the manuscript of Mrs. Cooks nearly completed historical novel On Rising Wings. The story is set primarily in 1844-1866 in Madison which calls itself, "the town Sherman thought too beautiful to burn." "Three love stories carry the reader through the carefully researched history," says Mrs. Cook. "Two of them are fiction. The one that has touched the hearts of my proofreaders is fact. it is the bittersweet love story of vice president of the Confederacy Alexander Stephens and the lady whose love letters I was fortunate enough to obtain." |
